WHO-? Oh, it's you! ((Mia)) Empty WHO-? Oh, it's you! ((Mia))

Calix felt a bit pleased walking around Camp Jupiter that day. He looked around at the Legionnaires. Some of them milled around in the streets, munching on an early breakfast and some sitting on the wall, sharpening weapons, looking out over the other side and some even taking a nap, obviously tasking his or her partner to wake them up if the praetor got near. He cast his eyes up that direction, giving the silent command for the snoozing Legionnaire to be woken. Some campers still were making their way to the baths or going back into their barracks for some reason or another. Either way, Camp Jupiter was alive. He’d heard how the first batch of Romans that arrived could barely fill one cohort. And even when he first came to the Legion, the number of people in the camp he felt was pathetic. Now it almost felt like home again. The hustle and bustle of the valley scaled down just a little bit. And these were his people. Every single one of them, even the ones sleeping on the wall, a Roman soldier. An army large and powerful. Maybe not as large and powerful as before the attack, but they all had their pride in their history… as they well should have.

The praetor didn’t exactly see his people through ethnic lines. They were one Legion. An army and a brotherhood no matter the background. All Roman. It was an understatement to say that Calix felt proud when it came to his heritage. As a fifth generation descendant from a mighty praetor blessed by Jupiter himself, Calix had a reputation to uphold. A reputation of honor, glory and everything that Rome held dear. He was raised hearing the stories of the Roman Army’s victories, their brave warriors and always strived and wished to be one. And not just one. But one of the best. And here he now stood. As praetor of the Legion and following in the footsteps of his father and his father’s father and his father’s father’s father and so on. Continuing this proud legacy and upholding the name of his family. Calix took a deep breath. He’d never felt better about his position than he did at that moment. It didn’t matter that they lived right across the wall. Calix didn’t wish to think about the Greeks and so he didn’t but unfortunately, that’s what brought him out of his office in the Principia in the first place.

While rustling through some paperwork the night prior, Calix came across a rather interesting read. A regular report from the senior Legionnaire in charge of duty at the wall, evaluating his team. The Legionnaire used the names for the majority of the Legionnaires, making it easy for Calix to verify and move on but then he read something else. The Greek. Calix blinked and started to pay much more attention to the report than previous. Those two words were repeated over and over again along with the designation of this Greek to the First Cohort. Calix blinked and looked at that over and over again, just to make sure that it wasn’t a trick of the light. A Greek. In his Legion. Residing in the First Cohort? How did he ever allow this to happen? So that’s what pushed Calix to his mission. An attempt to get to the bottom of this. A Greek. In his Legion! Infiltrated somehow and managed to be placed in the highest and most honorable cohort. Not on his watch.

Calix turned on his heel and walked to where he used to reside, the First Cohort barracks. The memories he had in this place ranged from good to ones he just wanted to forget. Most of them falling into the second category. The praetor stood at the door, adjusting his uniform and thinking about what he’d say. Nothing harsh. He was opposed to the Greeks but that didn’t mean he’d endanger the diplomatic relations between the two camps just based on one silly prank. The praetor knocked firmly on the door twice before opening it. He held himself up, head high, his best authoritative voice bubbling in his throat when he saw the one person who sat on the other side of the door. Mia. Everything clicked all at once as Calix stood there, blinking, trying to make sense of what he was seeing. Another dear friend. Another dear friend he feared was lost! Sitting right there in front of him! Slowly a small smile came over his face. He crossed his arms and leaned against the doorframe, shaking his head. “I should have known.”

WHO-? Oh, it's you! ((Mia)) Empty Re: WHO-? Oh, it's you! ((Mia))

Post by Mia Ioannou Sun Jan 26, 2014 9:10 pm

It was an understatement to say that Mia was exhausted. The girl had been up all night, stationed at the wall. She had been the highest ranking person on guard that night, next to a bunch of noobs, all of whom decide to sleep. She sneered when she thought of the gall of it as she cursed herself for being so kind. I stay up all night and for what? A couple of little kids who whine and complain about losing sleep to guard some stupid wall? she thought, yanking her helmet off and tossed it on her bed. They're lucky I don't report their whining little asses to the Praetors. She yawned and muttered in Greek, cursing their families and their audacity. She stripped of her armor and grabbed her gym bag, and headed to the showers, grumbling and glaring at anyone insane enough to be up before the sun was even up. While Mia knew she'd feel awful for it, she didn't care; she wanted to shower, go to bed, and get at least a few hours of rest before it was time to "rise and shine". She didn't even care that she terrified some kid in the line for the showers into giving Mia her spot.

The Greek ditched her clothes, and turned the water on full blast, jumping back out of the stream of ice cold water. "Dammit!" She muttered as looked at herself in the mirror as the water heated. Mia cringed; the shadows under her were getting bigger... Again. She sighed, making a mental note to get some sleep - consequences be damned - and pulled the electric clippers out of her bag, and trimmed the shorter section of her hair. The shower head spilled hot water and steam into the small room, making the mirror fog. Mia yawned again, before stepping under the scalding deluge of water and bathed quickly. Feeling renewed (and not sweaty), she dressed, gathered her things, and left, slinging both her gym bag and slightly damp towel over her shoulder as she left for her barrack, ready to sleep her way into oblivion.

-:-:-:-

Mia was sleeping peacefully, snoring quietly in her bunk. Her arm was draped over her eyes to block out the morning sun, the rest of her spread out. Her shirt had ridden up in her sleep, her toned stomach warmed by the light filtering in through the window near her bed. The Greek stretched in her sleep, murmuring nonsense in her native tongue, and pulled the several blankets that were draped over her legs up under her chin. She rolled on to her back, and sighed happily as the girl settled into her mountain of downy goodness. Yes, the demigod's slumber was peaceful indeed... Until the enormous box was delivered, making a huge thud as the heavy box hit the floor beside her bed.

It awoke the light sleeper immediately, causing a groan to burst from deep within her. "Stupid ducking messenger god..." Mia mumbled as she sat up, rubbing her eyes. "What's it take to get some sleep around here? Gods forbid I actually get a few hours of sleep..." She slung her legs off the side, looking down at the offending box. Her mother's neat, cursive handwriting was legible on the box's lid; the site of it brought a smile to the girl's face. Upon opening it, the girl's smile widened as the familiar scents of home and her parents brought memories and comfort along with it. A note was at the top, neatly folded, her name written across in her mother's fancy script. Mia scanned the note quickly, a wide smile graced her features when she read it was her christmas gifts from her family in Greece. Setting the note aside for later, she dug into the box, bringing up a rather festive box with a red bow around the box; a giddy feeling bubbled in her chest once she spied her grandmother's shaky, yet elegant scrawl. She pulled on the bow and squealed when she saw the nutty, sweet deliciousness of her grandmother's baklava. Her mouth was watering when two knocks sounded at the door. "Just a minute!" Mia called, grabbing a slice off the top as she unwrapped herself from the mound of blankets. The door opened anyway, relieving the smirking old friend, dressed in a Praetor's regalia. Mia fell off the bed in surprise.

Her surprise ended as everything clicked. The Greek jumped up, her limbs flailing in doing so, and she ran at him, giving him a massive bear hug. "Omigods! Omigods! Omigods! You're here! You're actually here!!"

WHO-? Oh, it's you! ((Mia)) Empty Re: WHO-? Oh, it's you! ((Mia))

Calix had to stifle a laugh when the girl plummeted out of bed. Just like her. Everything hit Calix at once, how much he missed his friend and her antics. He didn’t even make a move to go and try to help her up, he knew she was fine. Back in California it had been him, Calla, Sienna and Mia. An odd quartet (quintet if you added Calla’s brother, Cicero) but it worked. And Calix had reconnected with the two girls and other boy. Mia was the missing piece to his home puzzle. And there he found her. For a split second, Calix thought he saw confusion and then all of it flashed and dawned on her like it dawned on him. She scrambled up, and Calix knew what was coming the second she got to her feet. He opened his arms and Mia rushed into them, squeezing him nearly to death. Calix laughed and returned her hug swaying them back and forth for a little bit while she squealed in his ears. He felt her excitement and it seeped into him as well. He pulled away from her hug to get a better look at her face. The same old Mia, maybe a little bit older but the style and big goofy smile couldn’t be mistaken. He ran a hand through his hair, a smile very similar to hers on his face as well. “It’s me,” he confirmed spreading his arms. “In the flesh.”

Calix wondered what Mia must have thought after not seeing him for this long. Even though he had a prominent position in the Legion, he didn’t get out the way he used to. As made obvious by the fact that he didn’t even know that one of his closest friends was residing in his old barrack. He shook his head in wonder. “And look at you… Mia Ioannou. Legionnaire of the First Cohort.” he smirked. “That’s my old bunk.” Calix may or may not have been lying, he actually didn’t know if he told the truth with that statement but thought it’d be funny to tease Mia in that way since he knew that she’d probably have a few things to say in response. “It’s nice seeing you again.” Quite the understatement at one heck of a hug-out.

The girl’s grin grew as she nodded, sweet relief settling in her chest. It was so amazing for her to see her old friend after so many years of vacancy, so many long years of absence, and the fact that another of her closest friends had survived the attack made her heart soar. Mia had… never dealt with loss well, especially of those she cared about. When her hamster had died when she was young, maybe three or four years old, she had cried for days and was saddened for months; the loss of Matt was even worse, as the scars crisscrossing her thighs showed. She rubbed her them absentmindedly, the familiar pang of absence flaring for a moment, receding like a wave on the shore once she turned her mind towards the return of her friend. Don’t think about it… she thought, grinning when he mentioned her new home in the First. “Yea, I rather like it here… Much more cozy then Fifth. No wonder Calla’s pissed about getting put in Second.” Pushing her bangs out of her eyes, Mia gave him the once over, smirking when she recognized the uniform. “But I suppose that you’re much too good to be slumming it in First with those of us so unworthy of your title, Mr. I-Finially-Got-Praetor,” she teased, poking his shoulder.

Mia’s eyes went rolling at his comment and she punched his shoulder lightly. “Oh, come off it, Calix. Like you’d be able to remember something like that,” she said with a laugh. “Besides, you wouldn’t have liked it to begin with; the bed’s too soft.” Flopping onto the edge of the bed, Mia held up the container of baklava in Calix’s direction, attempting to catch herself a Praetor with the ooey-gooey deliciousness of the sweet. [color=#1cbbb4“Momma sent baklava, if you want some. And you can tell me what you’ve been up to, too.”[/color]

WHO-? Oh, it's you! ((Mia)) Empty Re: WHO-? Oh, it's you! ((Mia))

Just like when Calix reunited with Cicero, he saw himself in a half-in, half-out dream state. He just hugged Mia, the feeling of her arms still remained and his ears still rang a bit from the excited yelling. He smiled a little, believing just a little bit more in the goodness of the world. Calix wasn’t there during the invasion, but he did return as soon as he could to the wreckage and honestly, the worry and thought that took precedence in his mind was about his friends. About Calla, Sienna and Mia. And for a little bit he lost hope. With each reunion, Calix found himself able to breathe easier. Now, he found himself fully inhaling. No more worries. She was safe. And happy. And…. cozy. At the comment about her cohort placement, Calix couldn’t help but smile. Some things had definitely changed since California, her placement, his placement and Calla’s placement… the later causing a wider smile on his part and a wary glance behind him at the door just in the case the Legacy of Mars jumped in to reinforce her feelings about being put in the Second Cohort. “Ah, ah. Second Cohort Centurion.” Calix knew that the distinction didn’t do much to help his case, but he did believe that Calla was happier as Centurion than she would be just as a regular Legionnaire… no matter what Cohort… at least… that’s what he really hoped. And then Mia brought attention to his own uniform, the one that Calix nearly forgot he was wearing. He looked down at himself and smiled slightly, shrugging modestly. “It’s a bit of an accomplishment,” he chuckled.

The teasing along with the punch were completely normal feelings Calix could trace to all those years ago and feeling them again only further reassured him that she was there… so did the smell of the baklava. Oh man, how Calix loved those… He shrugged at the bed comment, knowing she was right and also half gone with the prospect of Mia’s mother’s homemade treat in close proximity. He gravitated toward his friend and ended up sitting right next to her, plucking a piece of baklava, taking a huge bite of it just as she asked her question. The praetor shrugged again and took his chewing time to think. “Nothing new. Praetor things. Training. I got engaged recently.” And he finished up the piece before reaching for another.

Mia grinned at Calix’s face as he bit into the sweet. “You’ve missed them, haven’t you?” she teased. ”Bet it was the only reason you missed me!”  In all reality though, Mia knew that wasn’t the case. The four of them – Calix, Si, Calla, and her – were a team, thicker than thieves. They were closer than friends; they were a family. With that, however, came some major teasing, something that the Greek was killer at. “Hell, I bet you’re thinking that baklava is the only good thing to come out of Greece.”

“I got engaged recently.”

Mia froze at the passing phrase, only having the presence of mind to not spill the entire tin of baklava onto the floor at her feet. The girl swallowed her mouthful of the delicious treat, setting it and the tin onto her nightstand, folding her hands in her lap once she was sure it wouldn’t tip and spill onto the floor. “You’re…” Finding herself unable to speak, she shut her mouth, trying to form words of congratulations or joy or something.  She took a deep breath, sat up straight, and looked Calix in the eye. “What?” she said, trying to not tackle him out of excitement for him. “You’re engaged?” Her voice broke off into a high pitched squeak, earning herself a mental face-palm.  “I mean, I’m happy for you and… whoever the girl is,” she said slowly, running her hands through her hair. “But, what? The emotions Mia cycled through at that moment sent her mind spinning. She stood and started pacing around the center of the room, hoping the movement would slow down the pace her thoughts were flying at.

It took several breaths, clenching and unclenching her fists several times, and a bit of hair pulling, but Mia was actually able to form intelligent questions. “How’d you meet her? When did you meet her? What is she like? What’s her name? When, and how, did you pop the question? And, last, but certainly not least, when’s the wedding? Are you two gonna get a marriage license? Why couldn’t you have figured out that I was here earlier so I would actually have time to get you guys something?” At this point, she turned to face him, hands on her hips: “And, why have I not met her yet?”

Missing the baklava was also an understatement. Calix recalled being younger and trying the sweet for the first time.  Being raised in a proud Roman lineage, he had (foolish) reservations about the baklava but once he had it, it became one of his favorite snacks. He had to admit that he did miss it, but not as much as he missed Mia herself. He liked to think that they hit it off pretty well from when they first met (even though the foolish reservations began when he found out that Mia had a Greek heritage) and they always seemed to stay on the same page. Even with the teasing. Calix smirked. “I know baklava is the only good thing to come out of Greece.” But during times like this they ran into a storm which significantly blew Mia’s book a few pages ahead… or behind. Either way, the mood completely changed when Mia became at a loss for words.

Calix knew he’d get a reaction once he mentioned the engagement. Mia knew Calix as the player who had a new girl on his arm more times than was probably healthy. When the other members of their little crew found out they, understandably, didn’t believe him. Then after a bit of convincing there was a lot of excitement. However, Mia seemed stuck in a state of confusion. Calix stifled a smile at the squeak. Yes, him engaged. Like placing a square block into a circular hole. Completely out of the question. Seemingly impossible. The praetor watched all of the emotions play across Mia’s face, the confusion trumping them all. He kept a close eye on her, part of him wondering if he was mistaking the confusion for devastation or something more along those negative lines especially at her exasperated ‘what?’. Calix began to doubt if telling Mia in such an off-handed way was a good idea but felt that she just needed a bit of time. So his eyes followed her, words of concern forming on his lips…. And then she began the rapid-fire questions. And that’s when Calix knew that she was excited for him too.

He kept a mental inventory of her questions, finding it rather amusing that ‘last but certainly not least’ turned out to only mark half of her questions. She turned to him in a menacing way just as he was finishing off his second piece, and he raised his hands in surrender. He had a lot of explaining to do. Swallowing, Calix smiled. “I heard her playing her flute more than a year ago and went to investigate. She’s… amazing.” he sighed wistfully. Mia knew all too well that the praetor didn’t like to get into long-winded speeches. But for some reason, when it came to Lúthien…  He shook his head only half aware that he may or may not be a bit red in the face.   “But are you sure you want to hear all of this?”

Mia returned to her seat on the bed as Calix’s attention seemed to wonder towards his mysterious fiancé. She smiles slightly at his tone, and it widened considerably when she noticed the reddish tinge on her friend’s cheeks. “She’s that amazing, huh?” her voice was soft, the lilting Greek in her accent becoming more pronounced. Despite Mia’s initial shock at the news, she was happy for him. Though, thinking about it, the girl had to be more than amazing, given that she was getting Calix to settle down. And what was this about knowing her for over a year? The Greek frowned slightly, resisting the urge to whack Calix for not telling her about this girl sooner. Yes, I want to know all of this, Calix! I wouldn’t have asked otherwise!”

Mia thought through her long list of questions she asked him. “You’ve already answered the how and when you met her…” she murmured, reaching for another piece of baklava. “Still don’t know her name though… Would be nice to know so I don’t screw up at the wedding.” Her mind drifted to the wedding in question. Everything she would have to do to be ready for it was slightly intimidating, and she didn’t even know when it was supposed to take place. Needless to say, it made the task only that much more daunting. “Seriously though, Calix. When’s the wedding? I kind of, sort of need to know this.”
