You Look Lost ((Jun-Ho Seon)) Empty You Look Lost ((Jun-Ho Seon))

When Izzy woke up with the sniffles, he was a bit disappointed.  He had wanted to go out hiking today...the weather had been beautiful the past few days and the autumn foliage in the woods was awe-inspiring.  The boy hadn't had a lot of time to go exploring recently.  There was a lot going on- he was starting to train more, something that was starting to feel more natural, thank the Gods.  Although the boy wasn't the fighting type, he knew it was necessary for a demigod.  It could, and probably would save his life someday.  He was working harder on teaching himself Latin.  Everyone said Latin came more easily to Romans, something the son of Mercury was finding true as he delved deeper into the language.  Basic fluency wouldn't be a problem soon enough.  There was Centurion training with Sienna...she worked him hard for the day he would rake over for her...even though both of them knew that wasn't going to be any time soon.  She still wanted him to be one-hundred percent ready...she had given too many stories about what happened with her and others who were less than.  And of course, a healthy amount of being social.

Over the past year he had been at camp, Izzy had gotten better at a lot.  More than he could even imagine, really.  In the mortal world, the boy had...pretty much nothing.  He was lonely and sad...he had no clue that he could do anything...special.  Camp Jupiter 2.0 had done wonders for the boy.  Things he would never believe to be possible were happening every day.  Learning to fight?  Learning Latin?  Being prepped for a leadership position?  And friends...friends?  If someone had told in what his life would become when he was still in the mortal world, Izzy would have laughed in their face.  Now...well he still had surprises, of course, but they were believable.  Being a part of this world was...a whole different life.  And a good one.

If there was one thing that Izzy really hated, it was the lack of romantic opportunities.  There were plenty of queer girls around, like the boy's closest friends Violet and Reiko, but no guys.  The only gay male demigods Izzy knew were Praetor Emmanual-Wheelan and Centurion Emmanual-Wheelan...who were now married.  The thought of romance in the mortal world was laughable.  Izzy knew two peers...and they had seen how well that worked out.  Things would properly happen when they were meant to.  Besides...the son of Mercury had a good life here.  He was learning a lot about...well, everything.  One of those things was gratitude.  Romance was not a sole source of happiness.  And the boy had plenty of people in his life that meant so much to him.  Why bother with some of these details when there was so much good.  Sure, Izzy thought about it...but he was a teenage boy.  What else could anyone expect?

These damn sniffles.  Izzy really wasn't feeling too great, and he knew how quickly the sniffles could turn in to something worse.  That was why the boy would be staying in and resting today.  He had suffered through Muster, and grabbed some toast and tea at breakfast to bring back to the barrack.  Upon arriving back in with his tea and toast, Izzy had gotten back into his pyjamas- heavy sweatpants and a long sleeve shirt to go with the cooler weather, and carefully eaten his breakfast.  He looked at the arrangement of books on his desk...there were a couple Latin books, battered copies of Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, and The Portrait of Dorian Gray (his three favorite books that he couldn't live without), and of course, the endless journal Mercury had gifted to him when he had claimed Izzy.  After a minute, the boy picked up Frankenstein.  He settled back in his bed, book spread on his lap and hot tea cradled in both hands.  The heat from it warmed him, despite how cold he felt.  All he had wanted was a walk in the woods.  Now he was sick in the barrack...determined not to bother anyone and just take care of himself.  How very British.  Although, of course, that meant a good amount of loneliness today.  Hopefully Sienna or Violet came through so the Brit wouldn't spend the day in...silence.  Gods, Izzy was bad with silence these days.

People would be in and out of the barrack, Izzy reminded himself.  He was just being a bit of a drama queen.  That tended to be how he got when he was sick.  As long as he just kept it to himself...didn't give people the wrong impression.  With a soft sigh, Izzy flipped his book open, only to hear the door open.  He wasn't suspecting the noise, and the Brit almost spilled tea all over his lap.  Whoever it was moved quietly, on light feet the way the boy himself did.  Though that could be anyone, as many people moved quietly through the barracks in case someone was napping or something.  Moving his tea to his bedside table, Izzy got up peeking around the corner.  An Asian boy, probably around Izzy's age, had entered the building.  Definitely a new legionnaire, as Izzy had never seen him before.  Just like Sienna was training him to work with.  Besides, the new boy was cute.  "You look lost," the boy gave a gentle smile.  Trying to forget that he was in sweatpants and a thermal top, Izzy took a step closer.  "Perhaps I can...lend a hand?"

Cohort...Barracks…Centurion…

The words swirled about inside of his head and were overwhelming him. And definitely not in a good way. (Was there really, ever a good way to be overwhelmed?) It reminded him of when he was first starting school in Montreal and discovering that he didn’t quite grasp the language that others around him were using. This made sense now, because he didn’t belong to that world, not any more…that’s for certain. But he was allowing himself to get off the task at hand. He needed to find his way through this blasted camp and he was determined to do so before dark. Which reminded him…what time was it really? After traveling alone for so long, his days and nights were definitely merged and he couldn’t tell the time. Again…off task. Barracks…that was the easiest thing to figure out first, or so he thought. No matter whom he asked, he was pointed in the same direction and it felt like he was walking in a continual circle, and definitely not one that he enjoyed at that.

“Barracks…” he finally mustered up to say to someone passing by, who gave him a little nudge in the right direction. Jun-Ho was surprised that he was even able to get the word out, seeing that it was unfamiliar, but at least he was on the right track, approaching the door and easing it open slowly, hoping that he wasn’t making much of a sound. The last thing he needed was to embarrass himself in front of anyone with a noisy door, but thankfully it was quiet. In fact, the entire barrack was quiet and he couldn’t help but smile inwardly to himself. Only very briefly though because smiling was unbecoming…or at least that was what his father always told him. Stern and serious, unwavering and proud. Well…not the last one really. But he would just keep to himself, find a place to sleep and try to figure everything out later. After all…

The voice took him by surprise and he couldn’t help but jump slightly, a bit startled as he turned to face the other boy. He opened his mouth, snapping it shut quickly, unsure about what sound was going to come out when he was able to form the right words. Sighing softly, he shrugged his shoulders, as if that would solve all of his problems for him, searching his mind for something, anything really, to say before things got really awkward (which, by the way, was his specialty…especially lately). He could feel his face burning slightly and he wondered what was making him feel so vulnerable. Was it the fact that he felt completely out of place in this whole camp? (He couldn’t help but wonder if there had been a mistake, if he should really be here. Did he truly belong here?) Or was it the fact that this boy was staring at him and it had been awhile since he had stopped in one place long enough for anyone to even get a good look at him? He was feeling a little self-conscious now, wearing his over-worn hoodie and torn jeans. It definitely wasn’t easy keeping your clothes looking nice while tromping about in the woods.

What had the other boy said to him anyway? …lend a hand. Oh right, he was definitely out of his element. Perhaps it would be best if he allowed someone to help. That thought didn’t really sit well with him. All this time, he had been wandering around, running in the world, on his own without any assistance. And now, here he was, willing to allow some stranger to help him? It was unbecoming, but again, perhaps for the best. It wouldn’t hurt to have one person that he could go to for help now, would it? Jun-Ho was letting his thoughts get away from him. If he stood there in silence any longer, the other boy would probably see him as being too weird and leave him be. Sighing once again (pretty much one of the only sounds he could make without thinking about it too much), he looked around him once more, mustering up something that wouldn’t sound too ridiculous.

“I’m new…”

Smooth, Jun-Ho. Really smooth.

He cleared his throat, his face going bright red, which definitely didn’t sit well with his complexion. This was his fear…that he was going to embarrass himself in front of someone. And here he was, unable to come up with much to say because… well, he didn’t know why. He just didn’t…talk much. At all. Ever. Shaking his head, he blew a strand of hair out of his eyes before rubbing his palms on his tattered jeans. Even though it didn’t matter to him now, he knew that his father would roll in his grave to find out that Jun-Ho was making such a poor first impression. He could hear the man’s voice now haunting him. Unacceptable. The single word sent chills down his spine. Or maybe it was the fact that he was thinking about the man that was dead, hearing his voice as if he was looking over his shoulder and assessing the situation. Jun-Ho knew that he could do a better job. He had to before this boy really thought that he was a loser and not worth his time. Let’s try this again.

“Help, much appreciated.”

Wow. Almost a complete sentence.

Izzy wasn't quite sure what he was expecting, but it definitely wasn't the surprise that his words seemed to have on the new boy.  The other had jumped when he had spoken, leaving the Brit to wonder if he should have announced himself better.  But it wasn't like he had just come out of nowhere.  Maybe the boy was just a little...jumpy.  Gods knew that happened around here.  There was truly so much adjustment in such a short amount of time when it came to camp...to being a demigod.  Everyone handled things differently...the son of Mercury hadn't talked to anyone when he had first arrived, aside from a brief encounter with Sienna.  Though she was his Centurion, so that was necessary.  It had taken him time to talk to anyone else...and even when he first spoke to Violet, it was for strange reasons.  Things had changed for Izzy...just as things would change for this new boy.  That was just how these things worked.  So maybe the boy should have approached the new boy a bit differently...but he, obviously, had no idea how the other would respond.  Wasn't that always the hard part?

The new boy was silent still, and Izzy figured he'd just let him have that silence.  To...process? the boy supposed.  Let him have his moment, or whatever he needed.  After all, there could be a million reasons as to why he wasn't ready to speak.  Maybe he was finding the right thing to say.  Maybe he was still processing that someone was there and had talked to him at all.  Maybe he was too terrified to form coherent thoughts.  No matter what it was, Izzy didn't want to push him.  That would be extremely counterproductive in the long run, and the Brit knew it.  He could let the new boy have his time.  It wasn't like he was going anywhere, with his sniffles and sweatpants and thermal top.  It could be hours before anyone came back into the barracks, which left the initial stuff on the Asian boy's shoulders.  Better him than some of the others, though...Sienna had been training him for just this sort of thing.  Being a leader, being a diplomat...everything that came along with Centurion duties.  And that definitely included greeting new legionnaires...getting them adjusted and all.  Izzy was a leader at this point, even if he didn't have the "official" title.  He could help this new boy.  He could be that person.

Simple words...but more than enough for Izzy.  I’m new…who the hell ever knew what to do at first?  Obviously this boy was painfully shy...and a good bit awkward.  That was okay, Izzy could deal with that.  He just had to show kindness...not be too harsh and all.  Sometimes people needed that...sometimes they just needed gentle.  The new boy definitely needed gentle.  "I can see that," the Brit said with a smile, taking a small step closer.  He figured the new boy probably needed a good amount of space...he just seemed like "that" type.  "It's okay," he promised.  "I know it's a big adjustment and all.  We all know that.  And we all start somewhere, so just relax.  We'll get you settled," the point was to make the new boy feel as comfortable as possible.  Izzy was pretty confident in his ability to do so.  He was sure he could get the new boy talking, get him situated and comfortable in the barracks.  Besides, the Fourth was probably the most nurturing cohort.  Just in Izzy's experience, and how he perceived the other cohorts.  The Fourth was family.  They looked out for each other.

"I'm here to help, then," Izzy smiled.  His nose twitched...grabbing a tissue from his pocket, the boy sneezed.  Gods, that wasn't how he wanted to be dealing with someone.  "My name is Izzy...I'm another legionnaire in the Fourth.  I would shake your hand, but..." the boy waved the tissue around.  "I'm a bit sick, and you probably don't want to catch anything the moment you arrive," nice and gentle.  Friendly.  Covering all his bases.  He could do this slowly.  Bit by bit...the son of Mercury was pretty sure that was what the new boy needed.  The bit that he had spoken was disjointed and shy...as if he wasn't used to talking at all.  The Brit had met people like that...they had talked so little that when it came to needing to talk again, they just couldn't.  It seemed like that could have been something going on with the new boy.  Izzy sort of got that feeling from him, anyway.  Which was fine...as long as he got a little out of the other, he wasn't too worried.  He could make this work.  Being a leader meant adapting to others' needs...just like this.

Still smiling kindly and trying to maintain personal space, Izzy looked over the new boy.  "And you are?" prompting for the boy's name felt sort of necessary.  He was still too quiet.  "I know it's...probably been a long journey.  Well, I'm sure it has been," he looked around at the bunks.  "There are a bunch of empty bunks where you can put everything down...let's see...there, there..." he pointed to the various bunks, trying to remember who was sleeping where at the moment.  Sometimes people kept things so clean it was hard to tell.  "You can usually tell...there's always a trunk or something at least showing where someone is," Izzy chuckled.  "Get comfortable...and we can talk some.  It's always easier to talk to someone right away.  You've been alone for a long time...I can tell.  But I promise you aren't any longer."
