Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13) Empty Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13)

The world could be a cold place and life could be lonely. Angel knew that, he believed that everyone did. No one could make him belief that he had ever been lonelier than he was now. Then again if anyone knew him well enough to tell him that the months before he went missing were lonelier than he could imagine he wouldn't be as lonely as he was now. In the few months that he had been back he met a few people that knew his face or name. Some had even met him but no one could tell him who he was. Even his father wouldn't tell him much. He explained some things about what it meant to be a son of his and he told Angel that he wanted to lose his memories. Angel couldn't do anything but damn his past self to Tartarus for that. Obviously he didn't anticipate what it would feel like to be like this. To feel so...separated from who ever you were supposed to be. Of course it did occur to Angel that whatever he wanted to forget was more terrible than not knowing who he was, maybe being free from the past wasn't such a bad thing. But he didn't know that for sure. Maybe his past self was really melodramatic and erased his memories over nothing. That was hard to believe though. He didn't think that his past self would erase his memories over nothing, after all he was still the same person, just without his past. At least he figured it worked like that, he couldn't be sure. He wasn't sure about anything, that was the worst of it all. Not being sure of anything, doubting his every thought, and the voice. The dark, seductive voice that he heard ringing in his head. Telling him what to do, and so far he had listened. The voice without a name hadn't given him any wrong advice, so for now he would trust it, no matter what the source of it was.

The arena was empty by the time Angel arrived. It was late, so it wasn't too strange that he was the only one going out for training. He figured that he was awake at night because of his father. He was the god of darkness after all. He figured the night suited him better than day. He felt more energetic at night so he figured that had to be part of it. Erebus didn't say anything about that. Nor about what other perks being a son of Erebus had. Angel wondered if there was any, Erebus only told him that it would be tough to be a son of Erebus. So far Erebus was right. Of course he could only remember the last few months which might be an absolute blast compared to the life he couldn't remember. So far everyone refused to tell him anything about his past and it was infuriating. People knew his face and they wouldn't tell him why, some would only look at him with a hint of anger in their eyes, especially Romans. Of course every time this happened he wondered why. He wasn't going to ask, he figured they wouldn't tell him anyway.

Angel practised the skills he had learned in the few months he spent at camp. Even though he didn't remember his muscles seemed to remember most of the things that he learned. There were exceptions though. Archery was something that he just couldn't get down. He tried, a lot actually. He figured it would be a useful skill to have but he was a terrible aim. He tried to hit the dummy in front of him in the chest but in the end his arrow didn't even hit the dummy. He tried for at least an hour before throwing the bow away and picking up the sword that he found under his bunk at the Erebus cabin (along with a lot of snacks for some unknown reason.) The sword wasn't great, actually it was terrible. Angel didn't know how he got it but he really didn't like it. It was unbalanced, the grip felt uncomfortable and its weight put him off. He couldn't explain it, but this sword wasn't what he needed. He figured it was good enough for training though. He knew that Hephaestus kids crafted weapons in the forge so he would get one of those soon but for now he would use what he had. He cut up the dummy that he failed to hit with bow and arrow until there wasn't much left of it. Sword play came a lot easier to the seventeen year old. Every movement he made seemed fluid and almost automatic. Even if he wasn't paying full attention his body seemed to know how to move. After he cut up his third dummy he figured he knew a lot of sword play before he erased his memories or it was simply in his blood. Given that he was a demi-god both answers could be the correct one. He wasn't going to linger on that question to long. By the time he made his first cut in the fourth dummy he had completely forgotten.

((Sorry this took so long! I went to Haiti for a mission trip. I hope you are still interested in this thread because I sure am. Also, you don't have to match my length, I just had a lot of muse.))

Once Adelaide was satisfied that she found Aria and was able to say goodbye, there was really only one other person that she thought she should say goodbye to. He was always a friend – more than surface level – but not someone she saw enough to consider a really close friend: Angel Colt. She had noticed the urge to talk to him more than once, but part of her was always afraid to. That is, after she and Avery started dating. Every time she had spoken to Angel or been around him, he had an eerie way of alluring her. But she shook the thought from her mind, things were different now. She was starting a family and the sole point of her mission today was just to say her goodbyes to an old friend. To be honest, she didn’t even know if he considered her a friend, but Angel knew more about her than almost anyone at camp, maybe even Avery, and that fact was unforgettable and binding for the fragile girl. The reason why she thought he might know more than Avery was because whenever something dark took ahold of her, Addie made sure to distance herself as far away as possible from him. He couldn’t handle it, and at such dire times as these, she couldn’t risk scaring him away again. But Angel and Colt had both been exposed to more of her darker side and he was okay with it.

As Aria reached the crest of the hill, Adelaide waved and with one last glance, allowed the shadows to form around her and draw her away from the color and light that exposed her much too well and went into the depths of the veiling forest. A pounding reverberated from her swollen stomach as she felt her baby move around. She was getting big. ”I know you don’t shadow traveling  that much, but I had to get out of the light.” I’m not supposed to even be at camp. Sighing, she set off along the path, waddling like only a pregnant woman could. It was starting to get too tiring and Adelaide knew she couldn’t do this much longer. She was stupid in the early days of the pregnancy and had suffered from it every day since. Adelaide’s baby should have died, but it was very strong – of two divine heritages. So what should have been taken out on the child had made Adelaide sick every single day since.

She sat down on a log as soon as her head began to spin. Was coming out this far even worth it? Addie knew these woods well enough to find her way back, but she was kidding herself to think she’d find Colt out here. After all, she didn’t even know if he was at camp to begin with. She hadn’t heard much talk about him being there – but then again, she only heard what was going on from Avery because she was being more than cautious about keeping herself hidden. The evidence of the fact that she was a fucked up whore was evident for everyone to see and practically blocking her vision; and the evidence that she was going to be a terrible mother as well as person was evident every time she stumbled onto the ground crying out in pain since she couldn’t double over anymore. Adelaide wanted so badly for her child to have the perfect life – one that there was no chance in hell she was able to give to her kid – that she even talked to Avery about possibly giving her up for adoption. But Addie cared about her child much more than her own life. And if she had to sacrifice herself to save it, she would. It didn’t help with the stress of Hades’ promise to kill Avery looming over her head. More than once, she thought that if Hades fell through with this threat, she would take her own life to spare the child of the terrors that fill this world and that the baby would have to face on her own, but an act that selfish would leave Adelaide in anguish for all of eternity. But anything would be better than leaving her child with herself as a mother.

As Amyna had once told Adelaide, “ you’re a train and I’m just a passenger, easily disposable. None of my words can make you change your course. The only difference is, as a passenger I can decide not to get off… and when you plummet, I will too.”

Adelaide thought this over, and she came to the discovery for the umpteenth time that it was unfair of her to throw her life away. But at the same time, it was unfair of her to get close to anyone and allow them to board that train… and more than anything, it was unfair of her to consummate the relationship with her boyfriend. This child would have had a chance with anyone else as its mother. That was one of the reasons why she had learned her lesson and she was done with simply disappearing. As she learned from Avery: that was the most dangerous thing she could have done regarding the people she was already close to. And so, this time, she was going to say goodbye. She was going to let people know why she was leaving…but she had to be careful.

The daughter of Hades knew full well that she didn’t have the time to search all of the woods for Angel, so she would try a few places on camp. Once she got too tired, though, she would have to give up: goodbye or not. On her third and final try, Adelaide placed herself in the shadows of the arena – mostly hidden from sight. There she saw him! With an army of pulverized dummies in his wake. The boy certainly had something on his mind… was it in her place to interrupt him?

”Angel?” She called out. There were no people around, but it was too risky to let anyone see her. Using the last bit of strength she had left, she walked closer to him, but pulled the shadow with her so that she was still mostly obscured if anyone tried to look at her from far away. ”It’s Adelaide,” she bit her tongue. She shouldn’t have come. Why would he want to talk to her anyway?

Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13) Empty Re: Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13)

Post by Guest Mon Jul 15, 2013 2:24 pm

Angel kept going, his body wanted him to stop. He felt his muscles aching and sweat dripping down his face but he kept going. As long as he cut down dummies he could forget about not knowing anything. He could forget that the ones that took him in were dead and gone and that the one that brought him here was a fucking flower now. Ever since he woke up on that roof his life was nothing but questions, death and being alone. He couldn't stand it anymore, but this helped. For the first time in months he could forget, even if it was just for a moment. With every move his body gave in to exhaustion a little more but he kept going. It seemed that in the end he could. He was tired but he didn't weaken or slow down, quite the contrary, every blow seemed to do more damage than the last and the more he tried to keep up his speed the faster he became. He was amazed at what his body was capable of. He had been training but this was the first time he really tried to push himself to the limit and so far he was still standing. He figured every demigod could push himself this far but it was amazing nonetheless.

Angel wondered if his body would give out before he ran out of dummies. He was out of breath but he could keep going. He was wondering how many dummies were left, there seemed to be an endless number of them and Angel think he knew the answer to his question. He wasn't going to last long enough to break the last one down. He wasn't going to stop though. He wanted to find out how far he could push himself without collapsing. So he kept setting them up and cutting them down for a while. He was still standing when he doubled the number of wrecked dummies and he wanted to try and double that number. He wasn't sure whether he would make it but he was going to try. At least it was his plan until he heard a voice calling his name. He didn't recognize the voice, which meant that this was someone he knew before he lost his memories. Usually he would jump at the chance to meet someone who knew him, and he did every time someone knew his name but no one could tell him anything he didn't know. He didn't think that this girl, Adelaide apparently, would be any different. Beside that he was also way to tired to jump at anything. Now that he stopped moving he realized how wrecked he was. But he had to keep going, after all he couldn't just collapse in front of this girl.

He looked at her, he couldn't see her clearly though. It seemed like she pulled the shadows along with her. Was she a daughter of Erebus? He couldn't imagine any other demigod that would be capable of something like that. Hell, he didn't even consider that he might be capable of that. “I'm sorry, I really wish that that your name would remind me of you but it doesn't.” Angel said. He looked at the brunette hoping that somehow his memories came back but just like all the others, even his dad, there was nothing. Angel's past was still as blank as it was before. He walked a bit closer and he saw something that he didn't notice, the girl he just met was pregnant. He couldn't tell how long she had left but he could see that she was pregnant. It was a good thing, new life was always a good thing in his opinion. He had seen enough death, and he wasn't even sure whether he had seen more than he knew.

“Adelaide right?” He asked just to be sure. He was tired and busy so maybe he misheard her name. “I don't know how well you know me, but I lost my memories a few months ago.” Angel said. He wondered what was going through her mind. If they did know each other, it must have been weird to suddenly be treated like a stranger. Sadly, she was nothing more than a name to Angel, not yet anyway. “I'm guessing we were friends though?” Angel said. He wondered if he finally found someone he used to be close to. He wasn't counting on it. So many times he had been greeted kindly and he never found anyone that actually knew him. He was afraid that maybe he didn't have any real friends at all. Just his luck.

Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13) Empty Re: Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13)

Post by Adelaide Reid Wed Jul 17, 2013 7:34 pm

Doubts and qualms swarmed through her head the moment she spoke her friends name. She shouldn’t have interrupted him, she shouldn’t have come to him with the visible evidence of her pregnancy and on the eve of her departure. Moving made her muscles quake and her vision blur. A nauseated feeling coursed through her stomach, but she let none of it show. Holding her head high, Adelaide bit her lip to keep it shut. She had made it this far… this couldn’t be undone. Might as well stick it out. If this Angel was anything like the one that she had once met, he would understand.

At the sight of her old friend, Adelaide almost took a step back. His face was red and hair matted to his face from the workout, but other than that, he looked positively exhausted. Those eyes that Addie used to think held the knowledge of the universe seemed even older and worn down than before. ”…Is this a bad time?”
Obviously, what could compel you to ask something as stupid as that? Her mind chided, making her feel even more feeble.
”I’m really sorry, I shouldn’t have…” out of habit, she scrunched her face a bit as if trying to hide the hurt. Feelings hit her so much harder, especially recently and it made her pathetic. Fucking hormones. But clearly the boy had a lot going on – she refused to be that girl who got hurt easily. Hiding any trace of emotion, she took a step back, ready to turn her heal and leave the poor boy in peace. However, what he said shocked her so much that she froze, letting his words roll over in her brain. ”…Has it really been that long?” She thought back to the last time she had spoke with him – before she ran away. Adelaide knew that she had many differences in her appearance now (her bulging stomach, she wore no make-up at all, and her illnesses made her so frail) she was no longer the strong, mysterious, and reserved girl. But there was no way she had changed so much that he wouldn’t recognize her… or her name for that matter. However, shortly he explained. A small ”oh,” escaped her lips. Memories and guilt poured onto her faster than she could stop them. Before she ran away, before she got pregnant, before Avery cheated on her, before everything that defined how she was living now had come to pass, she was meant to go to the Underworld with Adele and Angel. She was briefly asked for help but was never able to go in depth about the meaning of the journey. Was he meant to lose all memories or was that a mistake. Again, guilt about her selfishness crushed the girl’s spirits. She was supposed to be there and have helped. But it was all too late now. She had run away. Now, she had learned that it was one of the worst things she could have possibly done.

”Yeah… it’s Adelaide. You would call me that, though I’m known around here as Addie.” He seemed to be talking to her kindly enough so her fear and doubt that first overshadowed her slowly drifted away. Closing the distance between them and raising her hand, Adelaide moved to put it on his shoulder in an act of kindness, but she lowered it. She didn’t mean to make him uncomfortable. ”Yeah, we were friends.”

Frowning, many questions ran through her head, but she held them back, pausing only to ask, ”I’m sorry if you don’t want to talk to someone who you know only as a stranger… but… how much do you know?” She could only assume that few talked to him – so many people were terrified of him, but would Adele have shed light on his past? On Colt? Even if he didn’t know, Adelaide knew it wasn’t in her place to give him full disclosure. It would break him. But she would help as much as she possibly could. So far, the girl hadn’t seen a single trace of Colt, despite maybe the force in his fighting, but Angel even could be pushed to those limits when he had as much tormenting his mind as he seemed to at the time.

Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13) Empty Re: Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13)

Post by Guest Wed Jul 17, 2013 8:34 pm

“Addie it is.” Angel smiled. The girl seemed to be...uncomfortable. Even when she said that they were friends he didn't get the idea that they spoke to each other everyday. Of course he could only guess at the nature of their relationship. Angel didn't even remember her face, what she remembered about his was a question that he might never be able to answer. Angel just wished that she could tell him something he didn't know. Still he was skeptic about it. He figured Addie would be just like the others. “It's good to know I knew someone around here. I wish I could remember you, or any other people for that matter.” Angel said. He hoped that the girl wasn't too hurt. He couldn't really do anything about it but he could imagine that she would feel slightly hurt that someone she called a friend didn't remember her at all. Angel wasn't going to ponder on that too long though, after all there was not much he could do to change his condition.

“I can see every face I see, whether they know me or not as a stranger or as a friend. If you don't remember anything it really makes no difference, to me it doesn't anyway.” Angel didn't know if he really believed what he just said but he had to say something to let her know he didn't mind talking to her. If they really were friends than he trusted her which meant he could probably trust her now. At least he chose to believe that. He could really use someone to talk to. Training himself to death helped him forget for a while but it was a short term solution for a bigger problem that he couldn't fix on his own. He pondered on questions that he could never answer himself and when he realized that he got a sprinkle of hope that this was the one person that could tell him more about who he was.

“How much I know?” Angel had to think it about even though it wasn't much. A lot of it he didn't even know for sure. It was an interesting question though. He hoped that if there was something, anything she knew that he didn't she would tell him after he told her what he found out about himself. “I know my name and age. I know that my dad is Erebus and that my mum is dead.” Angel said. It was still something he wanted to ask Erebus about if he ever talked to him again. Angel wanted to know what happened to her, what she was like. “I know that I've been here before and that I've been gone for three months until I returned in March. Other than that I only figured out that I don't seem to know many people around here that can tell me more than that which probably means I used to have some hidden skeletons.” Angel didn't mention that he knew that he lost his memories because he wanted to. He didn't know how the girl would react to that so he didn't tell her about that. He just reacquainted with this 'friend' of his and he was already keeping secrets. Way to go.

“So how about you?” Angel said. “You know as much, if not more, about me than I do but I know nothing about you other than your name.” Angel said. He wanted to know about her. Even if she couldn't tell him anything he didn't already know maybe he could at least become friends with her again. He had the feeling that she could use a friend, after all she came to him. The others he met in passing or at some other random moment in time but Addie found him. Even if he couldn't remember who she was he could still be the friend she was looking for. After all he assumed he was the same person that he was before the amnesia. No one noticed anything different about him so far so he figured he hadn't changed much. Maybe this girl could at least disclose that for him if nothing else.

Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13) Empty Re: Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13)

Post by Adelaide Reid Tue Jul 23, 2013 6:02 pm

Addie got a strange feeling by the vacant way that he talked about what little he knew of his past was that he obviously wanted to fill the void and figure out what happened… but he didn’t seem to want to be the person that he was before. At least, he wasn’t trying to. Maybe this fresh start was really helping him after all. If he was happier without Colt and without his past weighing down on him, then she was happy for him. Just thinking about it made Adelaide wonder if everything would get easier for her if she just forgot it all… but she would never be willing to give up on her sister. Even though she was still gone, Adelaide thought about her every day.
”Wait… so… you don’t remember anyone?” Adelaide thought about what to ask next, but she was being cautious. She was afraid to ask the wrong thing and get him storming her with questions she wouldn’t be able to answer. Though this boy in front of her was someone entirely different than she knew – just with the same face – she didn’t want to let him down. ”Wasn’t Adele with you when… Do you remember her? I mean, sorry, I don’t know how to ask this: do you know who Adele is? Have you talked to her at all since getting back?” Thinking about it, that was another matter in itself. How did Angel even know to get back to camp?

”You may say that now, Angel, but I’d be careful. There are people around here with bad intentions. Because they have the advantage over you right now, there are probably people here who would want to hurt you…” trailing off for a minute, Adelaide thought of some people she noticed who were hostile to Angel. Sterling was one face that stuck out – but Aria mentioned he was gone. Though, Addie was certain there were more. ”Look, all I’m saying is, don’t be quick to trust everyone. Not everything is as it seems here.” After saying this, she knew she shouldn’t expect him to confide in her. But there was still a big part of her that cared about what happened to him. To this day, it surprised her that she cared. After all, he used to remind her of Hades… but now she realized that observation couldn’t be more flawed.

A wave of exhaustion and pain washed over her and Adelaide couldn’t help but let go of the pull of the shadow. It deteriorated around her and sunlight flooded over the girl. She closed her eyes in complete discomfort and waited for the pain to subside.
But she had to stay strong.
He began talking again and answered her question. To her dismay, all he knew was the bare minimum. ”Sounds like the story of a typical demigod. But you, my friend, aren’t a typical demigod. I’m afraid to say that the reason you know so little is because you tell so little. You’re a vault of secrets that I doubt anyone in the world will be able to uncover. The reason I mentioned Adele earlier is because I got the impression that knows more the rest of us.” Remembering her distant look, Adelaide recalled that Hades claimed to have tampered with her memories too. ”But… that’s just a guess. I would hate to send you off chasing dead ends. May I ask one more thing? I’m trying to piece this together myself. Is camp the last place you remember being or did you travel from somewhere to get here?”

“Well, you gave your typical demigod story – so here’s mine: I’m the daughter of a god too, my mom’s dead too. As are my foster parents, my best friend, and maybe even my sister. Death follows us all, some more than others… but Angel, you know much more than that.”
She paused a minute trying to discover what would be safe to tell and what wouldn’t. ”To state the obvious, I’m having a child, soon. Actually, that’s why I came to find you. Last time I left I never got to say goodbye. And I guess by the time I got back, you were gone. It’s been quite a while since we last spoke and I guess this much is clear now. You don’t even recognize me. By leaving last time, I was being a bad friend. By coming here I was putting it on myself to make amends. Because – because… I care about you. But now I’m more lost than before. You’re nothing like you used to be, in fact, you’re completely different. Though, the circumstances we’re speaking in right now are very odd indeed.” Taking a moment to breathe, Adelaide knew that this wasn’t what he wanted to hear at all probably, and she felt bad because of it. ”I’m sorry, I just don’t really know what to say.”

Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13) Empty Re: Those that we knew (Adelaide, PG-13)

Post by Guest Tue Sep 17, 2013 7:01 pm

“Not from before.” Angel admitted. He knew that it was pretty much a rhetorical question but he answered anyway although he couldn't really explain why. What surprised him more than that was the name Addie mentioned. Adele, he figured that had to be Adele Frye. He met her, she obviously didn't know him, or at least she acted like she didn't. If she acted, then she should have gotten an Oscar for that performance. He didn't talk to her for long, she was talking to some guy and he had the feeling he was interrupting. He was sure he was just as much a stranger to her as she was to him. So either Adelaide was very very wrong or something happened to Adele too, but what were the odds of that? “Adele Frye? I met her, I'm pretty sure that she has no idea who I am.” Angel said. “Or is there another Adele I don't know about?” He didn't think so but if there was than maybe she was the one he had been looking for, someone who really knew him. He had pretty much given up on that by now but a little spark of hope remained.

Angel knew what she was talking about, there were more than a few people that seemed to dislike him and he didn't know why. He had gotten used to all of that by now. He knew he had done some bad stuff in his past, a piece of knowledge that he hid from her but she obviously knew about it. Maybe she knew why, he could hear the voice inside his head. His own voice yet...different, told him to ask why people disliked him. To find out why he got looks and stares from people at camp. Angel wanted to listen. He always listened, but not this time. He made peace with the glares. He knew that he erased his own memories, there was a reason for that and he was sure that it had something to do with the morally questionable things he did in the past. “'I'm not a complete fool, I think I'd know if someone had bad intentions. I've spent enough time here to be able to defend myself anyway.” Angel said. He hadn't really tested his skills against another demigod, but he was confident in the fruits of his labour.

He wasn't surprised to hear that he didn't share much, not even a little bit. Obviously he hadn't changed that much, or at least, so he thought. He listened to what the girl said, again the name Adele popped up and he made a mental note to visit her again. He had to find out whether Adelaide was wrong, or whether Adele lied to to him. Both of those options seemed completely ridiculous but he couldn't think of any other explanation. The question Addie asked was finally one about his past that he could answer, it was quite a refreshing feeling. “I woke up in New York a few months ago. It wasn't really significant, empty other than an old beat up punching bag. A family that lived in the building took me in. A few weeks I ran into a satyr and he recognized me. He told me what he could about my past and took me here.” Angel said. He decided to leave out the bit that the satyr didn't make it. He wouldn't want the conversation to turn even more depressing.

Angel didn't know what to say when Adelaide told him about her past. It seemed like he wasn't the only one that might want to forget things. If his past was even remotely like that he could see why he decided to part from his past. The worst part about it though was that it was a 'typical' story. He couldn't even detect sarcasm when she said that. “It's fine. Honestly I find myself a bit speechless as well.” Angel admitted. “I must say that it's nice to know that I had real friends around here. I met some people that knew me but you seemed to be an actual friend. It's a relief. I wish I could give you what you seek but you're right, I'm not the same person, or at least I can't imagine that I am. I don't believe that you did anything wrong though. You did what you had to do, just like I did. If we had to apologize every time we do that I think that's the only thing we would be doing.” Angel wasn't sure if he believed his own words, but they seemed like the right ones. He hoped Adelaide agreed, if not, at least he tried.

“I've been trying to ask you something by the way.” Angel said. “How did you do that, with the shadows I mean.” Angel was still quite amazed by what he had seen. Most of all he wondered whether or not he could do something like that. He was the son of the god of shadows and darkness after all.

Hearing her breath leave her mouth in short gasps, Addie realized that she was panting. Pulling the shadow to shroud her used much more of her energy that she thought it would. And that was all for no use. She was completely exposed and vulnerable. Instinctively she took a step back. She wished to retreat into the cover. But her time at camp was fleeting. She needn't worry that it would get back to her in such a short amount of time.

Adelaide was lost in the frenzy of her own mind that it took her some time before she realized what Angel had said. Staying focused on one thing (in this case, a conversation) was quite hard for the girl. But the words repeated with urgency in her head. ”Adele Frye? I met her, I'm pretty sure that she has no idea who I am… Or is there another Adele I don't know about?” Taking a moment to think a solution out of her mistake, Adelaide said, ”F… Forgive me, Angel. I was mistaken. Just forget what I said.” It was convincing enough that she settled to be satisfied with it.
Unfortunately, she let her mouth keep spitting out words before she allowed herself time to think about them first. If she wasn’t careful, she was going to let something slip. For the boy’s sake, she could not risk that. Looking over the familiar face again, she noticed he had cooled from his interrupted workout. ”I don’t doubt your ability. And you certainly aren’t a fool….” Adelaide paused, tying to be more cautious. ”I was simply trying warn you, lest anything were to happen. Even if you can’t remember me, I was once your friend and I would like to remain loyal to that, if it is okay with you.”

Their conversation carried in another direction and for a moment, Addie was intent on solving the certain… mystery that had come her way, but what Angel said next left her more confused than ever. Just dropped off in New York? That didn’t sound right. Maybe he really did have amnesia. No. That made little sense too. Words would trigger old memories; he wouldn’t be so different now. She was going to stick with her gut feeling that magic of the Underworld was involved. Because of her heritage, unfortunately, she was hardly ever wrong on that front. ”Peculiar,” was the only thing she was able to say. ”Well… I mean… it was very nice of that family to take you in. I wasn’t exactly that lucky when I spent time on the streets.”

Realizing exactly how she sounded when she was talking, Adelaide noted that she was harsh, aloof. She was accustomed to talking like that, but it made her feel bad. When he stated that he was speechless, Addie bit her lip. Okay, maybe it wasn’t quite as typical as she said it was. Many demigods were brought up by nurturing families. But she would be lying to say that few experienced loss. There were few in the camp that hadn’t experienced that yet. Though death stings, it’s a promise. People are better off learning that sooner rather than later. Too bad for her, Adelaide was too comfortable with death that she challenged it time and time again and now Hades had guaranteed her a spot in hell. This promise didn’t exactly invite her now as it used to.

Smiling at her old friend, she searched his eyes with hers before letting her shoulders slump and let her eyes fall to the ground. ”Mainly, I’m just glad that you are alive. I’m sorry that I haven’t talked to you sooner.” Pausing for a moment, to reflect over the truth in what he had said. In their lives, now, it was risky to confide in other people and impossible to depend on them. People do what they have to and manage to survive.

She was taken away from these thoughts when Angel inquired about her powers. Laughing, it felt nice to bring a genuine smile to her face again. ”I would show it to you again, but my child had already made me so weak, I don’t think I could do it again and stay on my feet. It uses quite a bit of power, you see. … But there is this.” She used the shadows to transfer herself from her spot in the sun, to back in the shadows, where she was more hidden. ”That shouldn’t be news for you, Angel Colt. You can do that too. However, once you get good enough at using the shadows, you can start and learn how to manipulate them. Maybe once I’ve settled and piece my strength back together, I’ll come back and teach you.”
